OK, so it’s not exactly the middle of the year, but it seems like a good opportunity to set some mid-year resolutions for the remainder of 2010.
I think it’s good to set resolutions all year round, instead of only when the New Year rolls around. Especially as, in a probably alcohol-fuelled state of madness, you’re probably going to declare some utterly barmy objectives for the year ahead. Admittedly, I guess this argument only really applies if you aren’t celebrating the midpoint of the year with copious amounts of booze. And it’s the World Cup Final. So um, you may already be on that path…
Anyway, without further ado, let’s go through what I’d like to do over the next few months…
Launch at least one of my new projects. This is something I’ve been considering for a while, and I’ve started building the very first part of one such site. I think it’s fine to launch a cut-down site and list it as pre-release, or get it to beta, as that’s more than not launching at all. As for what I’ve been working on – I’m sworn to secrecy (my decision). Briefly though, I have several websites I’d like to develop, but I’ve struggled to find the time for them. However, I’ve found time for other things, which brings me nicely onto the next point…
Play Facebook games a bit less often. Yes. Too much time wasted on Facebook feels like a huge, well, waste of time. I’d also say I need to watch fewer episodes of The OC in quick succession but at least that’s a break from the PC. And, you know, The OC is a decent source of entertainment… whereas certain Facebook games seem to get played out of habit.
Retweet a few more links on Twitter. I do engage with people on Twitter, and I do post links to my posts, but I don’t share enough links from other people. So, I’ll try and keep an eye out for decent links and share them if I like them.
Attend an offline web event. Either blogging, or web development, it doesn’t matter which. I could set up an event, or attend an existing one. By the way, if you know of any in London that I might enjoy, give me a shout.
Get a business card. I know, this sounds a bit silly, but it goes hand in hand with attending an event. I should really get a simple business card with my name and a link to my portfolio so people can find everything I do. Oh, I should probably update my portfolio too… and find somewhere where I can buy business cards. I can already think of one site that’s more than slightly local…
Stop accepting projects that I don’t have time to do. I’ve actually started doing this recently, turning down a major piece of work just a few days ago. With a clear head and a rational look at what might be involved, I decided not to take on the job myself, and instead recommend calling the agency where I work. Even a small project is very difficult to commit to at the moment, as I work long hours and I have my own projects, not to mention my life! It would be a very different story if I decided to go freelance, but I’m simply not in the position to take that risk at the moment.
Don’t set too many resolutions at once. Oh bugger. I guess I can do some of the others, eh?
Why not join me by setting your own mid-year resolutions? Leave a comment with what you’d like to achieve in the latter half of the year. (And didn’t the first half go quickly?)
