Monthly round-up - March 2008

< Weekly round-up - April 2008, part 1 : Weekly round-up - April 2008, part 2 >

This is a special subscribers-only post, which means it will not be shown on the front page of my site.  Thank you for subscribing!

More reorganisation

I've been doing some more reorganisation on my site, the latest addition being Site News.  Ironically most of the content in this area is old news, but this is just because I moved several pages out of the main blog.  Most of the news posts will be for subscribers only.  I may even start to do this with some of the tutorials.  Let me know what you think.

Quality content

When I looked back on the site's progress in February 2008, I decided not to set myself any statistic-related goals and instead focus on writing killer content.  Aside from a few posts that were "below par", I think I did really well in March - 12 posts were stumbled, which is much appreciated!  This doesn't account for the number of stumbles I received on each post - I just keep track of which ones are submitted to StumbleUpon.

Unique visitors

I've also created a new statistics page so you can see all of my website stats from January 2008 onwards.  I started using Google Analytics in early December 2007, so that's why the stats only go back to January.

One thing you should look out for is the discrepancy in my unique visitors.  AwStats and Google Analytics use different methods to track visitors, and this may be why there is a difference.  The difference was much greater in March, which is why I have started to provide both figures.  I think it's a very good idea to look at your statistics in more than one place.

Subscribers

I've also displayed the number of subscribers I had on the first of each month.  You'll see I had 89 subscribers on April 1st.  Right now I have 104 subscribers, so you can see how quickly it changes.

Comments

In March my comments increased from 296 (in February) to 324.  It's great to read your comments and I'm still replying to them all, somehow managing to keep on top of them.

I've also rejigged my Top Commenter information.  On the statistics page you'll see the 20 people who have posted the most comments ever, and on the home page you'll see the 20 people who have posted the most comments this month.  With the monthly statistics, as there are lots of people with the same number of comments (mostly 1 or 2), I've modified the list so the newest users will appear first in each group.  Therefore, if 10 people post 2 comments, the 1st person shown in that list will be the newest user of those 10 people.  Of course, people who have posted more comments will be placed higher on the list.

Revisiting the weekly round-up posts

In case you missed any of my weekly round-ups in March or you want to have a whistlestop tour of the past month, here they are again:

Next month

I'd like to know if you have any suggestions for the next monthly round-up.  Next time, I will link to the statistics page, but I won't go into this much detail.  Perhaps a "best posts of the month" section would help you?  Or is there anything else you'd like to see?  Please let me know.  Thanks once again for subscribing!

Ben,
How do you write a post that is for subscribers only?

Hi Lightening, thanks for the comment. I have several areas besides my blog (which is also the front page of my site), and I can choose which of these come up in the site feed. Some don't come up at all, but those that do will be available to anyone who subscribes. I'm not sure how you would do this in other systems - I've seen it done in WordPress, so it should be possible, I'm just not sure how to do it as I'm not a WordPress user.
