How often should you blog about your blog?

< How do you avoid spam? | Blog Discussions | Can we find middle ground between blogs and forums? >

I don't mean "should you write tips for other bloggers?".  What I mean is, how often should you write posts that only focus on YOU and YOUR blog?

Your experiences

If you have a personal blog, chances are you do quite a bit of sharing.  Opinions, ambitions, changes in your life... it's all about you.

If you write blogging tips, whether it's on how to build a successful blog, how to market yourself online, or how to make money, you can relate many of the posts back to what you've experienced on your own blog.  What works, and what doesn't.

Sharing your experiences is what blogging is all about.

News and statistics

Sometimes you might have news to share with your readers, either some events in your life, changes to your blog, or a post you wrote for another site.

Statistics can be a good way to show how you're doing, although some people prefer to keep their stats private.

I wouldn't do too much of this - if you do it too often, it can get boring very quickly.  Also, news and stats can be more valuable if you post a few bits of information in one post, rather than posting every time you have a small bit of information to share.

Why you started your blog

It can be a good idea to occasionally explain why you started your blog, but you shouldn't need to do it all the time.  Put that kind of thing on your About page and let people go there if they want to know.

Why people should read your blog

Again, I think you can cover this on your About page.  If you find yourself continually explaining why people should read your blog, are you writing enough great content?

What do you think?

This post contains a few of my own thoughts - can you think of any other reasons why you should or shouldn't blog about your blog?  How often do you do it?

I usually blog about myself/life only when there's something interesting or during big events.

As to post about my own blog, I usually do a monthly traffic/statistic every beginning of the month :)

I think blogging about achievements is great as well.

I agree that much of this can be included in your about page. I've also started to include some statistics and rankings information on my "advertise" page. It's there if people are interested but not broadcast regularly. I'm thinking about putting a subscriber count widget on that page as well although I'm always nervous about the whole "dropping to zero" that feedburner does occasionally.

As for posting, I think it should be rather sparse. I've started including a few bits in some of my wrap-up posts on Lightening's Blogworld (covering all of my blogs) as per your suggestion in your post about wrap-up posts. That way the post is not ONLY about my blogs.

If I didn't blog useless information about myself and my blog I'd have nothing to blog at all. I'd just have to type random letters and let everyone think I was being really clever, typing in some very complicated code.

Do you think that would work? Seriously... it could... Hmmm...

Michael - that's what I do too.

esvl - I think it depends on what the achievements are, but in most cases I agree it's a good idea.

Lightening - don't worry too much about Feedburner glitches affecting your site's reputation; problems are relatively infrequent, and all sites are hit at the same time - so the issue is usually well-publicised. Glad you're doing wrap-up posts.

Laura - you never know until you try! Don't forget, you do the doodles too.

Thanks for the comments. :)

I tend to talk about my blog and myself in relation to any software, blog tools, addins or social networking sites I use. If I talk about any of these I feel that I have had to have used them myself, where ever, possible rather than relying on reviews made by others.

At other times I will talk a bit about myself as I feel that I need to personalize the blog but I do not think I do this too often - not consciously at least.

Thanks for commenting Sue. :) I think that's a good balance. Speaking from experience can certainly benefit readers.
