Created: May 13, 2008 21:57 / Edited: May 13, 2008 17:50 Do you practise what you preach? This site focuses on blogging and website tips without the jargon. Although I don't usually write with the intention of appealing to anyone and everyone, some of my posts may be of interest to a wider audience. For this post, I'm going to break that rule and branch out a little, as the saying practise what you preach could be worth thinking about no matter what you do. Consistency is keyIf you're going to comment on other sites, make sure the message you're communicating is consistent with what you say on your own site. For instance if you say on your site that you're passionate about blogging, but you go around saying that it's a real drag, some people may question your integrity.A good example I see again and again is when someone writes a post about proof-reading what you write, but the post itself has a myriad of errors in it. I'll admit to being quite particular about my writing, but I'm not perfect and I also don't go on about it all the time. Does it depend what your site is about? You don't have to run a site that's dedicated to, say, writing good English to have an opinion on it. I've seen plenty of sites where the author writes a post or two about common mistakes people make, and their site isn't focused specifically on the English language.Over to you...Do you practise what you preach?Tags: practise what you preach, consistency, english language |

I hope so. I do think it's important to maintain integrity in blogging as much as it is in real life.
Having said that, I think there are also times when we say one thing and perhaps later change our minds on the issue. Or is that only in parenting??? |

Oh I try to be consistent, but I think I blog and comment in a haphazard way. Come to think of it, I do most things haphazardly, so perhaps my haphazardness is actually a sign I am actually being consistent? If that makes sense ;)

When I am making a comment on another person's site, I hope it shows through that I am actually commenting because I have something useful to say about a particular topic.
In terms of practising what you preach, on our website we enjoy coming up with ideas and we strongly support creativity and innovation. We have some projects we are currently working on and hopefully once we release them, our visitors can see that we really do act on what we talk about. These things are important as people will recognize your integrity and want to visit your site as they get to know you better. |

I believe in just being yourself. Perhaps you have some topics you have decided that you'll not talk about. I guess omission is fine. Here's something I remember from a famous person (Mark Twain?) (and not directly quoted)
"I always tell the truth. That way, I don't have to remember what I've said." Integrity, honesty, and practising what you preach all-in-one. |

I try to avoid preaching. It isn't working very well for me. Seems I just keep wanting to teach people. I do like having events no one attends. Though Doodle Week has been far busier than anything I have done on my own. Thanks to Claire.
Consistency?.... Not me! Not keeping on topic but I do try to maintain a standard of fairly good grammar, spelling and punctuation to make up for my tendency to get sidetracked. Surely that counts for something. PS- Am I going crazy or did you re-assemble the order of your posts? I was looking for one I left comments on a few days ago and can't find it. Likely I've just gotten confused. |

Lightening - I've been through several "mind-changing moments" (as opposed to life-changing events) so I know what you mean. For instance I started subscribing to sites via email, but this quickly got out of hand and I moved to Google Reader. I was also dead against the idea of using tags until I found ways that I could benefit from them. I do think that some sites are very focused on "Web 2.0" stuff (a term I hate, by the way) for the sake of having it. Throwing tags onto a site does not automatically make them useful! You have to think HOW they will be used.
Suze - I guess you can be consistently inconsistent! I'm not really sure what else to say to that. lol. Marie - welcome. :) I think that Vivid Lamp is a great idea for a site. I wish you well with your projects. I will have to check out your site a bit more often, I reckon. It's a site I've known about since I started using Entrecard but haven't actually looked at much. I'll be there. Vincent - there are some controversial topics I avoid because they're not relevant to my site, and honestly, I don't have a strong opinion on many of them. I agree with telling the truth, as I'm very honest! Here's a quote for you from me (well, it's a combination of two sayings): "Honesty is the best policy, but the truth hurts." Laura - as I said to Suze above, you could be consistent at being inconsistent. :) Plus it allows you to cover a wide range of topics. I wouldn't be able to stay focused on writing new posts if I did this. I can see that others may be able to pull it off better than I can. After all, we all have our strengths, and should play to them wherever possible. As for reordered posts, which post were you looking for? I did move some things around and do it quite frequently so I don't have every post in the Blog section. Perhaps I was a bit too quick at it this time. Sorry! Thanks for the comments. :) |

I don't know what the post was about now. I could remember last time I was here. My memory works on the plan that there is something missing... more than I am able to actually remember anything.

This is a case for subscribing to sites. I can't remember, do you subscribe? I usually star posts in Google Reader if I like them and/or comment on them. The link to the post doesn't change even if I moved it, so that would help you keep track. :)

I blog about website accessibility. This makes it rather difficult for me not to practice what I preach. I try to implement all new things I would like to write about on my site first before I actually write the article. This has the affect that I have quite a few articles that have been placed on the back burner because I have not implemented the actual changes to my own site yet.
