Jargon Buster: Ping

< Comparing Twitter and blogging | Unsorted Posts | Sidebars: where do you put yours? >

After writing my Technorati guide, a bit of jargon came up in the comments: Ping.

A ping is a way of notifying a site that you have updated your blog.  Some blogging or website systems do this automatically when you post, although this can be configured if you do not want it to happen.

If your blogging or website system doesn't allow you to ping sites, you can still do it via Feedburner.  My new Feedburner guide will explain a bit about this along with plenty more information on Feedburner itself.

Meanwhile, for other bits of jargon you might want to decipher, try my Web Jargon Buster.

Oh yeah, we've been spamming, I mean, littering, I mean peppering your comments section with jargon.

We computer people sometimes forget there are people who don't understand when we say "just ping that site" or "have you pinged the computer?"... Sometimes, helpdesk support makes for trying times...

Ben, what I like the most about you site is the fact that I can find the answer to most any question I have about blogging, technorati, stumble, web hosting. You really make it easy to find help. Thank you for all your help. :)

One more thing. I gave this article a stumble. You are in my top ten faves.

ROFLOL. I READ this blog because it's so uncomplicated when it comes to jargon. Never occurred to me that I might actually start using jargon without even thinking about it.

Great pick up Ben. And great explanation. :)

I deal with the unwashed public everyday. I'm tech support. It's amazing how many times I have to repeat what I have said in a day. Often it's not anything technical. But some of the stupidest calls are from men with big screen tvs who try to give me their jargon speil and the measurements of their tv screen. Meanwhile, I just wish they'd figure out how to turn the thing on. Power buttons are your friend...

Vincent, Lightening, I think I can let you off - but why not add some jargon to the Web Jargon Buster? That'll help other people! :)

Vincent, I do tech support over the phone, and one of the trickiest aspects of the job is remembering who knows what! Some people know quite a bit, others don't know so much, but I have to keep switching my explanations around depending on how much the person knows. Still, we make a note of the calls on our customer database, so we usually have some idea.

ettarose - happy to help! Thanks for the stumble. :)

Lightening - thanks! :)

Laura - I'm tech support too, although the bulk of my work is actually in programming. I don't have to deal with people's TVs though. The fun part is controlling other people's computers remotely (obviously they have to let me in!). Then again, it's not so fun when the connection speed is slow.

Thanks for the comments. :)
