Building Blogs: News

< Helping readers to find your best posts | Unsorted Posts | Building Blogs: Reviews >

What's going on that your readers might be interested in?  A new release of your blogging system?  A new scientific discovery?  A new album by your favourite artist?

News is about communicating new information to your target audience.  It doesn't have to refer to the stories you see on the TV or in the best-known newspapers.  Your target audience might be interested in all kinds of news, but it is better to report on what's relevant to your site than just to randomly throw news articles into an otherwise well-focused blog.

If you run a news site, the reverse is true - focus on publishing the news.  There is a balance to be found and you may be able to mix the two.  Just don't alienate your target audience by straying too far from your site's focus.

Some sites simply report the news with no analysis of what the information means.  Some sites may use bias to turn a positive report into something less favourable, or vice versa.  Other sites will start by telling you what's going on, followed by some opinions from the author.  You may even find all of the above on a site depending on the volume of content and the overall style.

Sites reporting the news can have a dedicated team of writers who will get the news out very quickly.  It's hard to compete with this if you write alone.  The best thing you can do is provide a unique perspective into the subject matter by writing how you feel about the subject in hand.

Instead of saying "there's a new version of WordPress" - look at what the new version offers above the previous version.  List the things you do and don't like about it.  Give your readers more than just the information.  Give them your opinion.  After all, that is why they read your site.

Over to you...

Do you write about the news for your readers?  What kind of news do you feature?  When publishing news that a lot of other sites will already be talking about, how do you differentiate your site from the crowd?

Building Blogs is a new series where I look at the building blocks of a blog, and how to turn a simple concept into an excellent post that people will actually read.

Welcome, Siddharth. :) As I suggested in the post, have you tried giving your opinion instead of just sharing the news? Perhaps that could give you an edge over other technology sites.

I try and provide daily comment on the news, whether that's about politics, people or current affairs .

The style is deliberately cynical, the theory being that if you're " anti " everything you offend everyone equally so you don't lose readers !

Welcome Jim. :) Commenting is what sets you apart from other sites. Looks like you have the style nailed down very well!
