Comparing Twitter and Plurk

< Stream of consciousness blogging | Unsorted Posts | Building Blogs: Link Love >

Over the last few weeks I've noticed that Twitter has been on the decline, while Plurk has been gathering momentum. Both sites allow you to tell the world what you're doing, what you're thinking, and engage in conversation with other users. There are some major differences between the two, though.

I haven't written a guide for either of the two sites yet, so here's a quick overview of what they're all about.

A quick guide to Twitter

A quick guide to Plurk

Pretty similar, right? However, there are some key differences.

How Twitter and Plurk differ

What do you think?

Do you use Twitter or Plurk?
Would you be interested in tutorials that explain how to use them?

I neither twitter nor plurk but I feel I should... if only to understand them, so I would be interested in tutorials.

I'm also interested in Utterz...

I use them both, but have been using Plurk much more because of the Twitter down time. Although I found the timeline confusing at first, I have got used to it and love the conversational view. If all my Twitter friends were on Plurk, I probably wouldn't have a reason to use Twitter at all, though I still like it too.

I'm on Twitter and Plurk but I love Plurk more. I'm hoping my Twitter friends will convert. As it is I don't really use Twitter any more. I get lost in the pages and pages of tweets, most of which I don't want to read.

Plurks ability to timeline, thread, and mute are BRILLIANT! It makes it a much more accessable tool for me. :-)

I use Twitter. From the looks of it, Plurk seems more interesting. The part about conversation tracking is especially appealing. For all purposes, Twitter replies are individual twitters with no relation between them.

I'm not too sure about the interface though... Tweety birds are much cuter than monsters...

And yes, please write a tutorial! If nothing else, then only for Plurk. I'm too scared to sign up in case it sucks me right in and I get confused... and lost... :)

Twitter's actually scary in 3 instances for me. Because I've got 3 people who followed me, but I don't think it's for my dashing good looks :) I checked out their pages, and one of them was already following around more than 30000. Yes, you read it correctly, they are 4 zeroes there.

I doubt anyone can follow the conversation flow of more than 30000... I became just a statistic on their dashboard. The only (rational) explanation I could come up with was, they were in a "follow" contest. The winner was the one who followed the most people.

It's easier to follow people than to gather followers...

I tried Twitter but gave up because of the technical issues. I will give Plurk a bit of time and if they can handle the increasing traffic, I will give them a whirl. I am not really interested in this kind of mini-blogging (or not as yet) but I am always prepared to try something new. Thanks for an interesting comparison.

I just don't have time to do both, although I do use twitter at least weekly and Plurk I have just signed up for. I think that they both have value if you are on your computer or some kind of device a lot. I find that I go in intense bursts. It is hard to break the habit of Twitter and there are many ways to interact with it, so Twitter has an advantage for now.

I would gladly keep tweeting but it's getting annoying what with all my tweets getting lost and no one seeing my replies/updates. I can't be bothered to give something new a try because I really should be focusing on my job hunting and my own blog.

Thanks for the comparison though, have heard the buzz word (Plurk) around all right, but wasn't about to get off my lazy arse and find out for myself!

Twittter and Plurk sound like the symptoms of some awful tropical disease.

No other comment.

I signed up for twitter but never used it. I'm still busy to improve my site performance. And then, here comes Plurk (what a name!). So, Ben, what is your best recommendation? Both?

Right now I'd recommend Plurk over Twitter. It is more reliable and has a lot more to offer.
