A good description is the key to understanding
< What's your preferred blogging time? | Unsorted Posts | Can't see the wood for the trees? Stand back! >
This blog is all about blogging and website tips
without the jargon. A
jargon buster can help, but a good description is ultimately what readers are looking for.
An example of how
not to define something:
Lobbying: identifying areas where we need to lobby external bodies...
This is exactly the kind of thing I am trying to avoid. What if you don't know what "lobby" means? After all, isn't it supposed to define what "lobbying" means? How can you do that if you use the word you're trying to define?
Similarly, while I am very much in favour of telling people what an acronym stands for, this alone does not explain what the term means.
SEO stands for search engine optimisation. Right, well now you know what it stands for. So what does it mean? You need
a decent SEO guide for that.
HTML stands for HyperText Markup Language. Er, what's that? Better read my
HTML guide.
FTP: File Transfer Protocol. Yeah, OK, now tell me what it does.
What is FTP?
There's plenty more where those came from... check out my
beginner's tutorials to learn more.

Ooh that's one of those annoying things in life when someone uses a word and you ask them what it means and they go and use the same word in the definition! lol Even everyday English can sound like jargon sometimes when people try and sound smart by using words that aren't commonly used.
