Of rice and ramen - choose a memorable name for your site

< An experiment in advertising - 5 quick reviews | Unsorted Posts | How Plurk helped me to improve my tagline >

"Of rice and ramen". Now if I could write a blog with that title, I'd love to set it up. (If you have an idea that would work with that title, feel free to use it!)

Avoid generic names

Names are very important - they should be easy to remember, easy to spell, not too long, and not too generic.

"My Internet adventure" is a bit too generic for my liking. "Make money online" is far too generic. "How to earn a living online"... well, it's something people seem to want to know, but does the title really reach out and grab you?

The name of my site

Admittedly, my site could have a better title - "Blogging and website tips without the jargon" is a bit of a mouthful. I've considered other titles but just can't find anything better. "Ben Barden" isn't really the title of the site, it is the domain name and it is my name, but this is probably a good example of what not to do - the title of your site should really match the domain name you use. Oh well. I'm not going back now. It'd be a lot harder to move than to just keep building my site.

Does it matter in the long run?

Once your site has got started, the name may not actually matter as much. A good name can really help you to spread the word and get others on board, but most good sites will spread regardless of their name. I think the important thing is not to change the name partway through.

Should you use your own name?

Perhaps not, unless you're writing a personal blog. But if you don't use your name in the name of the site, I think it's wise to say who you are on your About page. People identify with other people.

What do you think?

How did you choose the name for your site?
Would you go back and change it if you could?
What are some of the best names you've seen?

I do believe a short and catchy domain name will help in the initial stages when you are trying to promote/market your site, brand it and attempt to let the rest of the blogosphere know about it. However, a lot of the short and catchy names have been taken up by individuals and companies who sit (or park it) in the hope someone will pay big bucks for that name in the near future. Unfortunately, this in turn makes it very difficult to come up with a memorable short name for one's blog.

For our main site "Vivid Lamp" we basically came up with it because we are a site that likes to promote ideas, innovation, creativity and to market and implement these ideas which in turn helps us and our readers. Basically, the word "Vivid" represents 'Clear' and "Lamp" represents 'Ideas' (because of the light that comes from a lamp is from a light bulb and light bulbs are generally associated with thinking or coming up with an idea).

A while back I actually wrote a post on our site about how people can use different techniques to come up with their business or website name. If any of your readers are interested the link is below:

Good luck everyone with finding a domain name that you really like and captures the essence of what your blog is about :)

Well, my first blog name came about because it's the my email address. And THAT came about as a play on the child's game of I spy. ISpy@aol.com (I was on AOL at the time)was taken, so I tried Eyespy and that also was taken as was eyespi, but when I added the number to the end of it voila! I was in bizness as they say.

My latest blog's name came about because it's a book review site, so I wanted something to do with reading. I lucked out on myreadingnook.com being available. It's not too long, or weird and tells you pretty much that that blog is going to be about reading.

The hardest thing I find about choosing a blog name is that unless you're an avid reader of blogs before you begin blogging then you have no idea how important the blog name (and URL) is.

Some people seem to be really gifted in coming up with good blog names too. I'm not one of them.

my first blog "my life and my loves" came about cuz i intended on keeping my family and friends up to date with things that were trivial - stuff you wouldn't talk about on the phone. i also like having a platform for spouting off at the mouth. lol.

as for Gallery Standouts...well, i think i'd rethink that if i could go back to the beginning. scrappers often confuse it with a forum name at DST. but we're heading on 6 months now and have built up quite a good following...like you said - no turning back now.

I suppose I should be concerned about this, if I want to be serious about this blogging stuff. But I don't know that I could ever give up fragileheart!

I don't think short is always better. Long can work as long as it's memorable.

Hi, Three years back,I started with blogging with a domain of my name. After blogging in that domain for one year, I understood it wont be possible to make name as a brand. Domains with names are good if it is a personal blog & if you don't have any commercial intention with that. Later, I started of with a separate domain which didn't had my name. So, in my way, when we think of the long term advantages, its better to have non-name domain.
