A sentence of advice to bloggers

< Why a lot of people still use Internet Explorer 6 | Unsorted Posts | Where do you find your inspiration? >

A couple of weeks ago, I answered some questions for an email interview with Jamie Harrop. I didn't know who else was being interviewed until the first interviews went up. Then I saw the other interviews going online.

It was rather humbling to be included in a series of interviews where - let's face it - the list of interviewees reads like the Who's Who in blogging. I'd highly recommend reading the entire series, as there's some really good stuff in there.

In one question Jamie asks for "one sentence of advice to bloggers". Here's what I came up with:

Write what you know and what you like, because blogging should be achievable and enjoyable.

It's a shame this is a bit long for a tagline, because I keep coming back to it over and over again, even though the first time I actually wrote it down was for this interview. Maybe I could distil it and use it to address the unresolved question of what my blog's tagline should be.

Anyway, it's food for thought at least. I should definitely put this tagline in a place where I'll keep reading it to remind myself why I blog. It might help when I'm between posts, and not overly motivated to write the next one.

Now, let's make this a bit more interesting. How about you try answering Jamie's question? Here it is in full:

If you could give one sentence of advice to bloggers, what would that be?

Think of it as a collaborative version of my Quick Tips. Give it a shot!

"Write with passion."

I believe everything else starts to fall into place after that...

"Just let it flow."

When you begin to think and think and think about a post, you lose the initial meaning and get caught up on the mechanics. Just let it flow. It will be perfect.

People tell me I'm good at distilling things - taste this for instance... fiery eh? Made from potatoes :)

I think your excellent potential tag-line gets a bit over-explanatory at the word 'because' - it's all in there before that word.

Hence: "Write what you know and like."

Want some more potato water? Maybe later.

In a strange way, "Defining Web Jargon" is a good tag line. In fact, the WAY web "jargon" is defined is by USING it. And the way it is used: In context (on the WEB). So, the "one sentence advice" (to "bloggers") might be the same (to "Define Web Jargon"). "Jargon" becomes a negative term, in such a case; but it is thereby defined IN THE POSITIVE (i.e. NOT jargon) through the action of of the blogger: And, he becomes a "concrete example". This is to say, the good blogger defines what it means to blog through blogging. He blogs about "web jargon" (web STUFF -- in lieu of it's being on the web). And he cuts through the jargon becoming understood as that person who is, in fact, "Defining Web Jargon".

"Be real."

Interesting advice, everyone!

Ken, I might just go with "Write what you know and like". But I'm beginning to wonder if the current tagline is actually OK. Decisions...

As my Glaswegian friend said about blogging to me today whilst I'm suffering writers block.
"Just F*%@ing Do It"

I think he may have stole it from somewhere...

I like the one about giving and not expecting from it.

In my case the best I've came up with in the past to help me was "Never write whilst bored". You can always tell when I've not really been into a piece when I've been writing it.
