Don't let quiet periods decrease your motivation
| Getting over the hump | Take some time out to reflect >
Today is December 13th. Not long to go until Christmas. At this time of year, many blogs, websites and forums will notice that their activity plummets - in fact many people expect it.
Is there any point making an effort to write new content at a time when you know people will be taking a break? Yes, I think you should. Let me explain this in a bit more detail...
Not everyone goes away for Christmas.
Also, not everyone even celebrates Christmas, possibly for religious or personal reasons. It's can have quite a bit to do with age - I'm 27, so not exactly old, but I'm old enough to have grown out of the excitement that comes from getting presents.
My wife and I will be spending some time with the family, but not loads of time. We'll be off work, which means we'll actually have
more time for things such as the Internet.
There's always a reason not to be online.
I've heard people saying "don't expect it to be busy around here, it's the holiday season". But to be honest, this varies between different people and different countries.
For instance, in Australia, Christmas is in summer. That's two reasons why people might go away, both at the same time. However, in the UK and the US, Christmas is in winter - summer is totally separate. So both of those times might be quiet. When it's summer "up there", Australia is in winter. So don't assume it's a quiet time of year for everyone in the world.
Similarly, there are always events to attend, people to see, places to go, birthdays, busy periods at work and so on. Don't let this stop you though.
Why blog is nobody else is online?
Blog anyway! Your readers might be glad of all the new content when they return. Then again, they might not... it depends on your target audience.
Tell your readers what you intend to do.
The best way to ensure everyone knows what's happening is to mention your plans in your blog. If you don't want to attract unwanted attention (such as negative comments or spam) while you're away, just say that you won't be posting as much over the Christmas period.
So, with that in mind, I'll just say this: I will try to keep writing daily blog entries between now and January. I might miss Christmas Day, but we'll see.
What do you think?
What do you usually do with your site at Christmas?
How do you try and get through quiet periods?
