On and off, On and on

< A bit of cross-promotion : People who want cheap ads are damaging Entrecard >

Are you an "on and off" person, or do you go "on and on"?  Read on and see if you can relate to any of this...

The "on and off" friend.

Have you ever had a friend who you don't hear from for ages, then suddenly you see them at short notice, then they disappear once again?  The kind of "on and off" friends who are so much fun to be with but they never really explain why it's so long since you last saw them.

When I lived in the UK, this happened to me a lot.  The irregularity and unpredictability of these people made it difficult to know what to expect from them.  I couldn't really rely on these people to help me out when I needed them most.

The "on and off" blogger.

This is the kind of person who blogs when they feel like it.  They don't tell you how often they plan to write new entries, or they announce a rough schedule that they don't stick to.

Some of these people still manage to get a reasonable number of comments from their most loyal readers.  But many readers will move on.

A good schedule is important - that is, having one and sticking to it.  Can you write one blog entry a day?  Good!  Now do it.  If not, find a schedule that suits you better, and tell your readers about it.  Otherwise, nobody knows what to expect of you.

The "on and on" friend.

These people won't leave you alone.  They seem to be at a loose end for most of the time and they're always free to meet up.  Problem is, they're already planning your next meeting before you've finished the one before!

I will openly admit that I have been like this in the past, and I know I annoyed a lot of people.  But I acknowledged the problem and stopped doing it.

The "on and on" blogger.

As a blogger, you don't want to come across as an "always on" person who "goes on and on" if you don't have much to say.

For instance, if you set yourself a target to write a blog entry every day but you don't have enough content to do that, don't post for the sake of it and write a lot of daily blog entries that are way off-topic.

Save something for tomorrow.

Some bloggers sound like they try to fit a week's content into a day's worth of posts, either as one really long entry or several consecutive entries on the same day.

There's no need to go overboard.  If you've got lots to say, work out a way to split your comments into multiple blog entries.  They're much easier to digest, and if you can leave your readers wanting more, they'll come back for more.  (Well, unless you don't give them anything interesting to read.)

What do you think?  Are you "on and off" or "on and on"?  Or are you somewhere in-between?
