Commenting FAQ

: Subscription FAQ >

This post answers a number of questions I've been asked several times about commenting at Ben Barden dot com.

How do I comment under the same name while logged out?

You need to use the same name and email address every time you post.  At the moment, you do have to enter these manually.  Logging in would remove the need to do this - see below for more.

Why do you use a CAPTCHA?  I don't like it.

To be clear, a CAPTCHA is the image you see when posting a comment - you have to type the two words into the box or your comment will not be posted.

Prior to using a CAPTCHA, I was getting a lot of spam - and this was when my blog was getting a lot less traffic than it is now.  I have no plans to remove the CAPTCHA - the ease of commenting for legitimate readers will be outweighed by the extreme annoyance of getting inundated with spam comments.

Is there any way I can avoid the CAPTCHA?

Absolutely.  After you post a comment, you'll see a "Thanks for posting your comment" page.  This provides some information on how to do this.

Basically, if you login, you won't have to deal with the CAPTCHA anymore.  Also, you won't have to enter your name, email and URL when leaving a comment - so it's worth doing if you plan to comment more in the future.

If you want to do this, click on the Login link at the bottom of the page and you'll see a "forgot password" link. Click on this, then enter the name and email address you used to post your comment. You'll get an email with a link where you can reset your password. Then you can log in.

Are there any other benefits if I log in?

Yes, you'll get the following benefits:
  1. Edit your comments.
  2. Edit your profile, including your website URL and link text.
  3. Upload your own avatar.
  4. Access a secret area under Music where you can download tracks that have not been released yet.
