Ben Barden - Life of a web developer
Blog posts are like buses. You don't see one for ages, then two come along at once.
Um. Anyway, I thought it might be slightly interesting to share my weekly schedule. Here's a typical week for me.
Monday: I never sleep too well on a Sunday night, so I'm usually tired today. Usually get up early to renew my weekly travelcard. I might have some extra work given to me too. It's hard to get started on a Monday though, as my brain likes to wander off in a daydream. I then tell myself to do some work. And to stop talking to myself.
Tuesday: I often say that I don't like Mondays, but I probably like them more than Tuesdays. I forget why. Anyway, Tuesday is a common day for meetings. It's also a productive day, although if I have work to do I'll get it done no matter what day it is. Seems like this schedule isn't as useful or interesting as I expected. Moving swiftly on...
Wednesday: Wednesday is the main culprit for problems with the trains, usually due to bad weather. It's also around now that I break my healthy eating diet and buy a coffee and some chocolate. Then I wish I hadn't and worry about spending an extra £4 when I spend a lot more than that on train fares.
Thursday: A day of progress updates and frequent interruptions. Around 2pm I'll put on my headphones and have a bit of a work blitz while listening to music that is really not suited to the time of day, but it's what I like. Thursday is the day when I like to do a new release on my projects, as it's really the latest you can go without releasing on a Friday (bad idea). Thursday is also when I buy lunch from Subway. I get the Sub of the Day, which is an Italian BMT on a Thursday. Then I go back to work and drop crumbs all over the desk. Haven't spilled my Coke yet, desperately trying not to because it'd be a waste. That, and the possibility of electrical problems... (no, not in the Coke... it's near my laptop... oh never mind.)
Friday: I love Fridays, and I often get loads done. Most Fridays result in lunch at Nando's, and some Fridays end with a trip to the pub for a couple of beers. These days it really is just a couple though, as it's a long way home and I don't have much interest in getting drunk anymore. Well, unless I get into some really good conversations and lose track of time, in which case it's a shame to leave.
Saturday/Sunday: See friends and family, work on my projects, listen to lots of music, drink some tea. My weekends are fairly quiet. Except when I see people who are noisy, which is often.
Actually, my weeks are not as predictable as you might think from reading this post, but the above is not uncommon. How does your week look?
